गिल के पिता दलवीर सिंह शेरगिल साठ की शुरुआत में जालंधर से ब्रिटेन पहुंचे. यहां वे बस ड्राइवर का काम करते, जबकि मां सिलाई-कढ़ाई करतीं. इसके पिता ब्रिटेन के सबसे पहले गुरुद्वारे- गुरु नानक गुरुद्वारा, में सालों तक अध्यक्ष रहे. प्रीत गिल का जन्म सत्तर दशक में हुआ, जो सात भाई-बहनों में सबसे बड़ी थीं. बर्मिंघम के बॉर्नविले कॉलेज में पढ़ाई के दौरान ही प्रीत राजनीति में एक्टिव हो गईं. कॉलेज की प्रेसिडेंट रहते हुए उन्होंने साइकोलॉजी की पढ़ाई की चलकर यूके की पहली सिख महिल एमपी बनी।
प्रीत हमेशा से भारत-विरोधी विचारों के लिए भी जानी जाती रही. बीजेपी का आरोप है कि वे अलगाववादी आंदोलन, खालिस्तान की सपोर्टर हैं, साथ ही अक्सर भारत विरोधी बातें करती रही हैं. अब आते हैं, इसपर कि गिल ने कब से भारतीय राजनीति पर बोलना शुरू किया. अक्सर प्रीत भारत के अंदरुनी मामलों में भी बोलती रही है . पहली बार उन्हें भारत की नाराजगी तब मिली, जब उन्होंने ब्रिटिश नागरिक जगतार सिंह जोहल को रिहा करने की मांग की. जोहल के बारे में गिल का कहना था कि भारत की पुलिस ने बेकसूर शख्स को पकड़ा है और परेशान कर रही है. वासे आपको यहां ये बता दें कि जोहल पर पंजाब में टारगेट किलिंग में शामिल होने का आरोप है.
